"It all started with good intentions. A group had heightened emotional and psychological experiences, and years later, some of the participants wrote regretful blog posts saying they gained a sense of purpose but lost their sense of self; their sense of proportion; and their sense. We’ve heard the story many times. Mostly what we hear is advice about how to prevent joining one, but what about how to prevent starting one? Sometimes a group takes hold of each other negatively without anyone having ever planned for that. Can it be better designed from the outset? I’ll suggest practical ways to short-circuit several kinds of self-reinforcing spirals of group norms, and share perspectives from multiple sources, plus my own experiences."

A regularly-occuring event in the Detroit area comes to Penguicon. A Dance Hell is more like cathartic dance than ecstatic dance. All the tracks are quality examples of their genres and were chosen for emotional power, but there is no "right" way to dance to them! And so, we will begin with a quick exercise in how to pantomime. Silent movies will project on the walls, timed to the playlist.

In fiction (you can't really do this in nonfiction without getting arrested), you should be mean as hell to your characters. This is particularly true for genre fiction, and doubly so for Horror. In this panel, we'll discuss how far to go, whether it's okay to kill your protagonist (spoiler: I have no problem doing this), and how to do it in a way that won't leave the reader mad at you (probably).
